After only a few hours, I awoke, groggy and irritable.

Fucking espers, screwing up my REM sleep.

“Druid, there’s a triple espresso and a breakfast burrito waiting for you in the kitchen. Furthermore, Constellation has left seven voice messages over the last several hours.”

“Thanks, Emma,” I said as I undressed and headed for the shower. “Doesn’t that woman sleep? Do laundry? Shit? Breathe?”

“I wouldn’t care to speculate on her performance of base human functions. Speaking of which, your breakfast will be kept warm for you until after you’ve finished with your morning routine.”

As I quickly washed and shaved, I wondered whether I should share my midnight visit with Emma. She knew everything about my life here on Superhero World, from what I ate, to how long I slept, to my conversations with other supes. For all I knew, she kept a log regarding the weight and volume of my daily eliminations.

It’s like having the world’s most intrusive smartwatch. One you can never take off.

Despite that I’d grown fond of Emma, her ubiquitous nature kind of creeped me out. Ultimately, I decided to keep the visit to myself. I could always play it off later by saying I thought it had only been a dream.

Once I was dressed, I took time to enjoy my coffee and burrito. After a few bites, I held the latter up in a sort of salute to the ceiling. Honestly, I was never sure about where I should focus when speaking with the AI.

“This burrito isn’t half bad. How’d you get the eggs to be so creamy?”

“Crème fraîche.”

“The chives are a nice touch,” I added around a mouthful of breakfast heaven. “Where are we on embedding the kernel copy in my phone?”

“I finished the task while you were asleep. You’ll need to enter a command to activate it once you’re within range of Wrath’s mainframe. What’s your current age?”

“Official, or cumulative?”

“Let’s go with your official age, as measured by earth years on your home planet.”

I scratched my head as I chewed my burrito. “Twenty-one, I think.”

“Type ‘druid21’ three times consecutively into the device, and the shard will activate.”

“What about freezing it?”

“Speak the same command aloud.”

“Is there anything else I need to do?”

“No,” Emma replied emphatically. “The kernel copy will hack into any ambient wireless signals in the vicinity, and piggyback on that signal to gain entrance to the system.”

“How long until it finds what we’re looking for?”

“It could be minutes or hours, depending on the level of security James Glinton has coded into his systems. Of course, there’s always the possibility that he’s stored the data offline. In that case, it’ll be up to you to locate the storage device and connect it to an accessible network.”

“Hmm.”

“If you keep frowning like that, you’ll wrinkle prematurely. Is something bothering you?”

I popped the tail end of my burrito in my mouth, chewed twice, and swallowed the bolus with a slug of coffee. “Maybe the question I should be asking is whether we’re going to hand that data over to Enigmata once it’s in our possession.
